Aldi periodically sells a pizza oven through its Specialbuys range, and every time it hits shelves it sells out within hours. But is the Aldi Gardenline pizza oven actually any good, or is it just hype driven by the low price tag? We bought one, used it extensively over several weeks, and compared it against premium alternatives to give you an honest verdict.
The Aldi Pizza Oven at a Glance
The Aldi Gardenline Gas Pizza Oven typically retails for around 100 when available, making it roughly one-third the price of the Ooni Koda 12. It runs on propane gas, reaches temperatures up to 300 degrees Celsius, and fits pizzas up to 12 inches. The build is stainless steel with a ceramic pizza stone and a built-in temperature gauge on the door.
What We Liked
Impressive Heat for the Price
In our tests the oven consistently reached 280-300 degrees Celsius within 15-20 minutes of lighting. That is genuinely hot enough to cook a decent pizza in 3-4 minutes with a properly charred, puffy crust. At this price point, that performance is remarkable.
Easy Assembly
Out of the box, assembly took approximately 10 minutes with basic tools. The legs fold out, the stone drops in, and the gas regulator attaches to a standard patio gas bottle. No complicated setup or special parts needed.
Solid Pizza Stone
The included cordierite pizza stone heats evenly and produces a crispy base without any obvious cold spots. After seasoning it with a few practice pizzas, the results were consistently good. The stone is removable for cleaning.
Compact and Portable
Weighing around 13kg, it is light enough to move around the garden and store in a shed or garage between uses. The fold-down legs make storage straightforward.
Where It Falls Short
Temperature Distribution
The single burner at the back creates a noticeable hot spot. Pizzas closest to the flame cook faster, so you need to rotate them every 60-90 seconds for even results. Premium ovens like the Ooni Koda distribute heat more evenly, reducing the need for constant attention.
Temperature Gauge Accuracy
The built-in thermometer on the door reads the air temperature near the top of the oven, not the stone surface temperature. We found it consistently read 30-50 degrees higher than the actual stone temperature. An infrared thermometer is a worthwhile 15 addition if you want accurate readings.
Build Quality
The stainless steel is thinner than premium alternatives. After eight uses we noticed some discolouration around the burner area, which is purely cosmetic but suggests the metal may not hold up as well over several seasons of heavy use. The door hinge also feels slightly flimsy compared to the Ooni or Roccbox.
Availability
The biggest downside is that you simply cannot buy it whenever you want. Aldi Specialbuys appear seasonally and sell out almost immediately. If you miss the window, you could be waiting months for the next batch.
Aldi vs Ooni Koda 12: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
The Ooni Koda 12 costs approximately three times more than the Aldi oven. For that premium you get more even heat distribution, a higher maximum temperature of around 500 degrees Celsius, thicker and more durable construction, and a better turning peel included in the box. The Ooni also reaches cooking temperature in about 15 minutes and produces Neapolitan-style pizza in 60 seconds.
If you make pizza regularly and want restaurant-quality results with minimal effort, the Ooni is worth the investment. If you want to try outdoor pizza making without a big financial commitment, the Aldi oven delivers surprisingly good results for the price.
Tips for Getting the Best Results
- Preheat for a full 20 minutes before your first pizza for the best stone temperature
- Use a turning peel and rotate the pizza every 60-90 seconds to avoid burning on the hot side
- Keep pizza dough thin, no more than 3mm, for the crispiest base
- Less is more with toppings. Overloading leads to a soggy centre
- Stretch your dough on semolina flour rather than regular flour for easier launching
- Buy an infrared thermometer to know exactly when the stone is ready
Our Verdict
The Aldi Gardenline pizza oven is genuinely impressive for the price. It heats up properly, produces good pizzas, and is easy to use. It is not as refined as an Ooni or Roccbox, the heat distribution requires more hands-on attention, and the build quality suggests a shorter lifespan. But for anyone wanting to try outdoor pizza cooking without spending several hundred pounds, it is excellent value if you can get your hands on one.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does Aldi sell pizza ovens?
Aldi typically releases its pizza oven as a Specialbuy in spring and summer, usually between April and June. Stock is extremely limited and sells out quickly both online and in store. Sign up for Aldi Specialbuys email alerts to get notified.
What gas does the Aldi pizza oven use?
It uses standard patio propane gas bottles with a 27mm clip-on regulator, which is included. A 5kg gas bottle will last approximately 8-10 cooking sessions.
Can you use the Aldi pizza oven for other cooking?
While designed for pizza, you can cook flatbreads, naan, roasted vegetables, and even fish at high temperatures. A cast iron skillet placed inside works well for non-pizza items.
Is the Aldi pizza oven worth buying over the Ooni?
If you are unsure whether outdoor pizza cooking is for you, the Aldi oven is a low-risk way to find out. If you already know you love it and will use it regularly, the Ooni Koda 12 delivers noticeably better results with less effort.
