Buying guide

SCA certification

A Specialty Coffee Association seal means the machine hits the correct brew temperature (92–96°C) and contact time. Moccamaster, Wilfa and Sage all have certified models.

Shower head and saturation

Even water distribution across the bed is what separates great filter brewers from supermarket ones. Pulse-brew features improve extraction on single-cup volumes.

Carafe type

Thermal carafes keep coffee hot for 2–3 hours without a hotplate — far better for flavour than a glass jug left on heat.

Grind requirements

Medium grind is standard. Paper filters produce the clearest cup; metal filters let oils through for a fuller body.

Frequently asked questions

How is filter coffee different from French press?
Filter uses paper which traps oils and fines — cleaner, brighter, more tea-like. French press is fuller-bodied but muddier.
What’s the best ratio?
60g of coffee per litre of water is the SCA standard. Adjust to taste — most UK drinkers prefer 55–65g/L.
Do I need a grinder?
Strongly recommended. Pre-ground coffee stales within days of opening. A £50 burr grinder pays for itself in improved flavour.
