OUR SCORE

The running watch the Forerunner 255 should have been

AMOLED screen, multi-band GPS, full training-load suite. The smart choice for committed runners under £500.

Our verdict

Ten weeks with the Forerunner 265 and 420 kilometres of Sussex trails, London parkruns and Highland hiking later, it is comfortably our top pick for mid-premium running watches. The jump from a Forerunner 255 is real: AMOLED is transformative in bright sunlight, battery life holds up at around 10 days in smartwatch mode, and the redesigned ‘Morning Report’ actually gets looked at first thing instead of ignored.

At around £379-429 on Amazon UK, it is not cheap. Casual runners who jog once a week will get 80% of this for half the price with a Forerunner 165. But for anyone running 3+ times a week, training for an event, or wanting detailed recovery data, the Forerunner 265 is the sweet spot in the Garmin range.

Who is the Forerunner 265 for?

The 265 is the right watch for committed runners training 3+ times a week, multisport athletes who want triathlon mode, and anyone who has outgrown a basic fitness tracker and wants real training insight without jumping to the £600+ Forerunner 965.

If you run twice a week or less, a Forerunner 165 saves you £150 and covers the essentials. If you need offline maps, jump to the 965. If you want a do-everything smartwatch, an Apple Watch Ultra is the better pick.

AMOLED screen, honestly

We were sceptical about AMOLED on a running watch because Garmin’s MIP screens are legendary for battery life. In use, the AMOLED is revelatory in bright conditions: mid-Wiltshire sun at 1pm, the screen is readable without effort. The auto-brightness sensor handles the transition into woodland or evening runs without lag.

The trade-off is battery. MIP watches last 2-3 weeks; the 265 lasts 10-13 days in mixed use, or 20 hours in multi-band GPS mode. For most runners this is plenty — we charged weekly on Sunday evenings. Ultra-distance runners and 100k racers may want the MIP-based Forerunner 255 Solar still.

GPS accuracy in the real world

Multi-band GNSS is the feature you actually notice. We ran a 5K route through narrow streets in central London; the 265’s multi-band mode traced the correct pavement on 96% of the route. Our old Forerunner 245 would have cut corners and added 200m of phantom distance.

Under tree canopy (Sussex bridleway tests): still sharp, with occasional minor drift but no major jumps. Open countryside: essentially perfect. Trail runners in dense forest will appreciate the upgrade.

Training load and recovery features

The ‘Training Readiness’ score (0-100) is the feature we check first every morning. It combines sleep, HRV, acute load, stress and recent training to tell you whether today is a hard or easy day.

Over 10 weeks we correlated the score with actual workout performance. On days where Readiness was below 40, threshold runs felt objectively harder. On days above 70, intervals went smoothly. It is a genuinely useful prediction, not a vanity metric.

Music, payments and smartwatch use

500 songs of storage covers a standard running playlist. Spotify Premium users can download playlists offline; Apple Music is not supported. Garmin Pay (contactless) worked at every UK retailer we tried in the test window (Tesco, Pret, Shell, TfL).

Notifications from iOS or Android are clear but read-only — you cannot reply from the watch. For a dedicated smartwatch experience, Apple Watch or Pixel Watch wins. For training, Garmin wins comprehensively.

Running costs and lifespan

Hardware: £379-429 depending on colour. No subscriptions required for any feature. Strap replacements: £25-40 every 2-3 years. Expected lifespan based on our Garmin fleet history: 5-7 years of heavy use.

No recurring costs makes this one of the cheapest premium fitness products to own long-term. Apple Watch requires periodic battery service; Oura Ring requires £5.99/month. Garmin’s one-off model remains refreshing.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Forerunner 265 worth the upgrade from the 255?

For most runners, yes. The 265 gains AMOLED, a slightly smaller case, better GPS and an updated UI. The 255 gains battery life in MIP mode. If you regularly do multi-day ultra events, keep the 255; otherwise upgrade.

Does the Forerunner 265 have offline maps?

No. For offline TopoActive maps you need the Forerunner 965 or an Epix/fenix. The 265 has breadcrumb navigation for saved courses, which is enough for most runners.

How long does the battery last in GPS mode?

About 20 hours in multi-band GPS mode (most accurate), or 30 hours in standard GPS mode. Plenty for a marathon or weekend trail run, borderline for ultras over 24 hours.

Is the Forerunner 265 waterproof?

5 ATM rated, which covers swimming, showers and rain. Do not press buttons underwater. For scuba, you need a Descent.

Does it work with Apple Health and Strava?

Yes to both. Garmin Connect auto-syncs to Strava and can export to Apple Health. Real-time workouts upload within 30 seconds of ending via phone Bluetooth.

Can I use the Forerunner 265 for swimming?

Yes, pool and open-water swim modes are both supported. Heart rate accuracy is limited underwater (optical sensors struggle through water) so pair a chest strap for accurate swim HR.
