Eight weeks of post-run calves, desk-job neck crunches, and one stubborn case of plantar fasciitis later, the Theragun Mini has earned its spot as our recommended portable massage gun. The fundamental upgrade over rival budget massage guns is quietness — the Mini’s QuietForce motor is genuinely subtle enough to use in a shared room without bothering anyone.

At around £149-179 on Amazon UK it is priced above Bob and Brad or RENPHO alternatives. The premium buys you: quieter motor, better battery life, branded attachments that do not degrade, and the confidence of Therabody’s warranty. For occasional users a Bob and Brad C2 at £55 is fine. For daily use and travel, the Theragun Mini is the right buy.

Who is the Theragun Mini for?

This is the right massage gun for regular runners/cyclists/gym-goers (3+ sessions per week) who need portable recovery, for office workers with neck-shoulder tension, and for travellers who want something that fits in a carry-on.

It is the wrong pick for heavy deep-tissue users who want maximum amplitude (get the Theragun PRO or Elite), for occasional users who want something cheap for the bedside table (Bob and Brad C2 is fine), or for anyone expecting it to replace a sports massage — it does not.

Power and real-world use

12 mm amplitude is a meaningful step below the full-size 16 mm Theragun, but above most sub-£80 rivals at 8-10 mm. In testing on post-run calves, the Mini delivered enough penetration to address trigger points within 90 seconds of targeted use.

9 kg stall force means you can lean into it firmly without the motor slowing. On stubborn IT band tightness at the highest speed, it maintains pace where a cheaper RENPHO model we compared slowed to a crawl under the same pressure.

Noise: the real upgrade

We measured 60 dB at 1 metre on speed 1, rising to 68 dB on speed 3. For comparison, a Bob and Brad C2 measured 72-78 dB across its speed range. A noisy electric toothbrush is about 65 dB.

In practice this means you can watch TV in the same room as someone using the Mini without cranking the volume. The older (2019) Theragun Mini was louder; the 2nd gen QuietForce motor is a genuine upgrade.

Battery life and charging

Rated for 150 minutes. Across 8 weeks of daily 5-10 minute sessions, we charged about every 12 days. USB-C charging takes roughly 2.5 hours from flat. This is dramatically better than the original Mini, which managed about 90 minutes.

One small grumble: no charging cable carrying case in the box at this price point. Most users end up using a generic USB-C phone charger, which is fine.

Therabody app and guided routines

Optional but useful. The app connects over Bluetooth and provides 10-15 minute guided routines for specific sports (marathon training, cycling, tennis) and body areas (upper back, IT band, plantar fasciitis). It talks you through pressure, speed and duration for each area.

Best for: users new to massage guns who do not know where to apply pressure. Less useful for experienced users who already know what they need. All app features work without a subscription.

Theragun Mini vs alternatives

Against the Bob and Brad C2 (~£55), Bob and Brad offers 5 speeds and more attachments for a third of the price, but is significantly louder and has shorter battery life. Fine for occasional use; inferior for daily use.
