The smart scale for data-loving households
Accurate to ±0.1 kg, body composition matches gym scan within 2%, and the app genuinely makes the data useful.
Our verdict
After three months of daily weigh-ins for a three-person household, the Withings Body Smart has converted us. The headline benefit is not the body composition analysis (which is good but not lab-grade) — it is how the Withings Health Mate app turns a messy daily measurement into actionable trend data you can actually read.
At around £99-119 on Amazon UK, it is roughly double the price of a basic Fitbit Aria Air or a RENPHO budget scale. The premium buys you: better build quality, Wi-Fi sync (no phone tethering needed), more accurate impedance measurement, longer battery life, and the Withings ecosystem which is the best in the category. For anyone tracking long-term health, it is worth the extra.

Who is the Withings Body Smart for?
This is the right smart scale for households where multiple people want to track weight trends, for anyone training towards a body composition goal (cutting, lean bulk), and for people managing chronic conditions where weight trends matter (heart failure, diabetes).
For a solo user who only wants weight tracking, a cheaper Withings Body+ (~£75) or even a basic RENPHO (£30) is fine. The Body Smart is worth the upgrade when you want multi-user, Wi-Fi sync and more accurate body composition.
Weight accuracy vs calibrated gym scale
We cross-referenced 30 weigh-ins against a calibrated gym scale. The Body Smart was within 0.1 kg on 28 of 30 measurements, and within 0.2 kg on the remaining two. Repeatability (same-session twice in 30 seconds) was within 0.05 kg every time.
For tracking purposes this is essentially perfect. The consistency is what matters for trend analysis, and the scale delivers on that.
Body composition: how accurate?
We also compared fat percentage against two InBody 770 bioimpedance scans done at the gym over 8 weeks. The Body Smart reading was within 2% of the InBody on both occasions (14.2% vs 15.8% on scan 1; 13.9% vs 14.4% on scan 2).
Muscle mass was within 1.2 kg. Body water was the weakest metric with a 4% deviation from InBody. Bone mass was effectively static (as it should be over 8 weeks).
Bottom line: Body composition is consumer-grade, suitable for tracking trends over weeks and months. Do not use it to inform medical decisions, and for competition-level body recomp the scan is useful as a trend indicator only.
Multi-user recognition
The scale auto-identifies users by weight fingerprint. In a 3-person household with weights spread 30 kg apart it never misidentified across 270+ weigh-ins. For couples within 5 kg of each other it does sometimes hesitate — you tap the right profile on the display.
Each user gets their own sync to their own Health Mate account, so my weight data does not end up in my partner’s Apple Health log and vice versa.

The app is the real differentiator. Weight trend charts show 7-day, 30-day, 6-month and 1-year views with visual indicators of direction and rate of change. Goal setting is straightforward (target weight + target date) and the daily nudges are encouraging without being annoying.
Integrations: Apple Health, Google Fit, Strava, MyFitnessPal, Apple Watch, Fitbit. All work bidirectionally. A weigh-in on the scale hits all connected apps within 30 seconds.
Body Smart vs alternatives
Against the Withings Body+ (~£75), the Body Smart adds standing heart rate, ‘Eyes Closed’ mode (weight shows only after you step off) and a higher-resolution display. Worth the upgrade if you like the extra data.
Against the Fitbit Aria Air (~£50), the Withings is dramatically better: Wi-Fi, more metrics, better app, multi-user. Fitbit Aria Air is basic and only really worth it if you are locked into the Fitbit ecosystem.
Against the RENPHO Smart Scale (~£30), RENPHO has similar body composition metrics for a fraction of the price. RENPHO’s app is functional but basic; Withings is noticeably more polished. For single users on a budget, RENPHO is fine.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Withings Body Smart accurate?
Weight is accurate to ±0.1 kg in our testing. Body composition (fat %, muscle) is within 2% of lab-grade InBody bioimpedance scans, which is good for consumer use. Body water reading is the least reliable metric.
How many users can it track?
Up to 8 individual users, auto-identified by weight fingerprint when each person steps on. Each user gets their own Health Mate account sync.
Do I need Wi-Fi, or can I use Bluetooth?
Both work. Wi-Fi setup means the scale syncs without your phone nearby — just step on, step off, data uploads automatically. Bluetooth works if Wi-Fi is not available.
How long does the battery last?
About 18 months on 4 AAA batteries with typical daily use. Rechargeable lithium versions (Body Comp) last similar but need USB-C recharge every 12 months.
Does the standing heart rate work well?
It gives a resting HR reading that matches our Garmin within 3-5 bpm most mornings. It is consumer-grade, not clinical. Useful as a trend indicator rather than a diagnostic tool.
Is there a pregnancy mode?
Yes. Pregnancy mode replaces body composition metrics with a safe weight-gain tracker, and provides reassuring guidance on expected healthy gain trajectories through each trimester.
