Our verdict

Over three months we have cleaned two driveways, a 45 square metre patio, two cars, the garden furniture, fence panels and the kitchen bin with the Karcher K4 Power Control. It has handled every job without complaint, the built-in LCD on the lance genuinely helps get pressure right for each surface, and the storage design means we actually put it away rather than leaving it on the patio.

The Power Control upgrade over the base K4 (around £30 more) is worth every penny. The lance display tells you the recommended pressure for car paint, wood, stone or brick, and a button toggles between modes without walking back to the machine. For most UK homes this is the sweet spot in the Karcher range — the K5 offers more power you will rarely need.

Who is the K4 Power Control for?

This is the right pressure washer for homeowners with a driveway of 20-60 square metres, a patio, and occasional car cleaning duties. The K4’s 130 bar pressure and 420 L/h flow rate clear heavy algae and moss in a single pass, and the on-lance display prevents accidental damage to delicate surfaces.

For smaller homes (flat with shared parking, small balcony or patio), the K2 or K3 at 110-120 bar is plenty and saves £80-100. For large rural properties with gravel driveways and farm buildings, step up to the K5 or K7 for longer hoses and more pressure.

Cleaning performance across surfaces

Concrete driveway with algae: 25 minutes for 40m² including a quick re-pass. Block paving with weed lines: 40 minutes with the Dirtblaster nozzle — fast and satisfying. Porcelain patio tiles: 15 minutes for 45m² with the Vario lance on low pressure.

Cars: set the lance display to ‘car’ mode (about 60 bar) and the K4 cleans without stripping wax or damaging trim. Note: never point directly at rubber seals or sunroof drainage channels.

Wooden decking: use the ‘wood’ preset at around 40 bar. Pine and cedar decking survive fine; older rotting timber can splinter if you get within 15cm.

The Power Control lance, honestly

This is the feature that justifies the K4 over the base K2 or K3. The lance has a small LCD with four pre-set pressure modes: stone, wood, car, and boost (low pressure for detergent). You press a button on the lance and the machine adjusts pressure without you walking back.

Saves significant time across a long cleaning session, and prevents accidental damage when you switch from paving to the car. Worth the £30 premium over the non-Power-Control K4.

Noise and neighbour-friendly use

Measured 84dB at 1 metre when running. That is louder than a petrol lawn mower. Not neighbour-friendly for Sunday morning use in a terraced street.

Best practice: run on weekday afternoons or Saturday mornings, not before 9am. The noise is unavoidable — this is a mid-range induction motor pressure washer, not a quiet brushless premium model.

Storage and build quality

The K4 has an integrated hose reel and nozzle storage rack on the back. Both are genuinely useful — we actually coiled the hose away after each use rather than leaving it in a heap. The machine stands upright on two wheels and tucks into a garage corner without taking much space.

Build quality is solid. Plastic shell, metal motor housing, proper seals on the high-pressure connector. No leaks in three months. Karcher UK offers spares for everything if something breaks long-term.

K4 Power Control vs K2, K3 and K5

Against the K2 Full Control (~£100), the K4 has nearly 20% more pressure, a longer hose, on-lance surface presets and more cleaning area per hour. K2 is fine for small flats and balconies.

Against the K3 Power Control (~£170), the K4 adds about 10 bar of pressure and a longer hose. Mostly a wash unless you specifically have larger areas.

Against the K5 Premium Smart Control (~£350), the K5 adds Wi-Fi, more pressure and a quieter motor. For most UK homes the K4 is the sweet spot.
