The GPS tracker to buy if you ever walk off-lead
Live tracking that actually works in rural UK, good battery life and a subscription that is the real reason it is reliable.
Our verdict
We tested the Tractive GPS DOG 4 on a working Cocker Spaniel for ten weeks across Sussex woodland, Scottish Highlands and central London walks. It is the first GPS tracker we have tested where the live-tracking feature would genuinely be useful in a real lost-dog scenario: updates every 2-3 seconds, accurate to within 3-5 metres, and with a cellular connection that held up in remote Galloway Forest where our phones lost signal.
The catch, as with most pet trackers, is the subscription. Tractive Premium starts at around £4.99/month on a 5-year plan or £8.99/month monthly. Without it, the device is essentially useless. That said, the subscription is the reason the service actually works — cellular coverage and map servers cost money. We think it is fair value if you genuinely worry about losing your dog.

Who is the Tractive for?
This is the right product for dog owners who walk off-lead, have a history of escape-artist dogs, or live in rural areas where Bluetooth-based trackers (Apple AirTag, Tile) are useless. If you fit that profile, the Tractive is the right buy.
It is not worth it for indoor cats (an AirTag is cheaper and effective), for very small dogs where 35g is a meaningful percentage of bodyweight, or for owners who only walk on-lead in town and do not need anything beyond basic Bluetooth range.
GPS accuracy in the real world
We took the Tractive on 23 walks across three distinctly different environments. In open Scottish moorland, live tracking was accurate to 3-5 metres with near-instant updates. In dense Sussex woodland, accuracy dropped to 5-10 metres with occasional 5-second lags as the device acquired a fix through tree canopy. In central London, accuracy was 3-8 metres but with more jitter due to tall buildings.
Crucially, during a panic moment when our Spaniel chased a pheasant and disappeared for 7 minutes, we watched her run 400 metres through woodland on the live map and were able to intercept her at the far edge of the field. AirTag would not have worked at that distance.
Battery life and charging
Manufacturer claims 3-7 days. In our testing, standard tracking (2-minute updates) gave 5-6 days from full charge. Live Mode (2-3 second updates) drains the battery from 100% to 20% in about 24-28 hours — usable for a panicked search but not for daily use.
Charging is via the included magnetic clip, takes about 2 hours. Best practice we settled on: charge every Sunday evening, use standard tracking during the week, toggle Live Mode

You can create unlimited virtual boundaries in the app. We had one around our garden (alerts if the dog leaves), one around a regular park (alerts if she goes beyond it), and one around a friend’s farm (we get an alert if she wanders out of the field).
Geofence alerts arrive within 30-60 seconds of the boundary crossing, which is fast enough to react. False positives happened twice over ten weeks, both times while she sat near the garden boundary and GPS drift caused a brief ‘out of zone’ reading.
Subscription economics, honestly
Hardware: £49-69 on Amazon UK depending on colour. Subscription: £4.99-8.99/month. Over five years the total cost of ownership is roughly £300-400. Compare to pet insurance excess + replacement costs if a dog is lost and never found — the maths is easy to justify for most owners.
Tractive runs regular Premium sign-up discounts (we have seen up to 50% off the first year). Black Friday is usually the best time to commit to a multi-year Premium plan.
Tractive vs alternatives
Against Apple AirTag (~£29), Tractive wins decisively on range and live tracking — AirTag relies on the iPhone Find My network which fails in rural areas. AirTag wins on zero subscription and smaller size.
Against PitPat GPS (~£49 + £7/month), Tractive has better live-tracking update rates. PitPat has more detailed activity tracking features.
Against Jiobit (~£79 + subscription), Jiobit’s hardware is smaller and lighter (18g vs 35g), which matters for small dogs. Tractive has better UK coverage and faster live-tracking updates.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Tractive GPS Dog Tracker need a subscription?
Yes — the device is effectively unusable without Tractive Premium. The subscription covers the cellular data, GPS services and map servers. Premium runs £4.99/month on a 5-year plan up to £8.99/month on a monthly plan.
How accurate is the live tracking?
Under open sky, 3-5 metres. Under tree canopy, 5-10 metres. In urban canyons, 3-8 metres with more jitter. Update rate is 2-3 seconds in Live Mode, 1-5 minutes in standard mode depending on settings.
Is the Tractive waterproof?
IPX7 rated — survives immersion up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. Our test Spaniel has been in two ponds and a river crossing with no issues. Long-term submersion (e.g. left in the washing machine) is not guaranteed to survive.
Can it be used for cats?
There is a separate Tractive GPS Cat version with a lighter, safer breakaway collar. The dog version at 35g is too heavy for most cats. Do not put the dog version on a cat collar.
How long does a charge last?
3-7 days on standard tracking. 24-48 hours if you are running Live Mode continuously. Charging takes about 2 hours via the included magnetic dock.
What happens if the subscription lapses?
The device stops communicating with the Tractive servers, so no live tracking, no geofence alerts, no history. The hardware itself continues to work the moment you resubscribe. No data is lost during a lapse.
