The grippiest yoga mat you will buy, and it ages gracefully

AlignForMe alignment markings genuinely help form, and the grip holds up in hot yoga as well as gentle hatha. Premium price, but the mat you keep.

Our verdict

Six months of daily practice on the Liforme Original (approximately 180 sessions of hatha, vinyasa and occasional hot yoga at home) and it has comfortably earned its place as the mat we recommend. The grip is the standout feature: even in sweaty downward dog after 45 minutes of flow, our hands do not slide.

At around £110-135 on Amazon UK it is significantly more expensive than a supermarket mat at £20 or a mid-range Manduka PROlite at £80. The premium buys you: best-in-class grip, the genuinely useful AlignForMe markings, natural rubber base (no PVC), and durability that means this is a 5-10 year mat rather than a 2-year disposable. If you practise 3+ times a week, it is the right buy.

Who is the Liforme Original for?

This is the right mat for dedicated home practitioners (3+ sessions per week), for hot yoga enthusiasts where grip matters most, and for anyone who wants a mat they keep for 5+ years rather than replacing every 18 months.

It is the wrong mat for absolute beginners who are not sure yoga will stick (a £20 Adidas mat is fine for the first 3 months), for travelling yoga teachers who need a lightweight folding mat, or for those with latex allergies (the natural rubber base is problematic).

Grip in real practice

We tested grip in three conditions: dry hatha practice, 60-minute flowing vinyasa, and a hot yoga class. In dry conditions the grip is excellent for every mat we have tested. The differentiator is sweaty conditions.

After a 40-minute vinyasa, we put our hands on the mat in downward dog and leaned in. The Liforme held; our old Manduka PROlite slid. For hot yoga specifically, this is the mat that works without a towel.

The AlignForMe markings, honestly

Liforme’s ‘AlignForMe’ system is a set of etched lines and markers that indicate where to place your hands, feet and spine for correct alignment in standard poses. Initially we were sceptical of this as marketing.

After 6 months, it genuinely helped. For poses where alignment matters most (Warrior II, Triangle, Eagle), glancing at the marks during practice self-corrects foot position and hip angle. It also helps with symmetry — you notice when left and right side placements differ.

Thickness and joint comfort

4.2 mm is thicker than a standard 3 mm mat but thinner than specialist joint-protection mats at 6-8 mm. The compromise works: thick enough for kneeling poses without knee complaint, thin enough for balance poses where thick mats feel unstable.

For anyone with serious knee or wrist issues who finds the 4.2 mm still uncomfortable, the Liforme Move (also 4.2 mm but with extra padding in specific zones) is an alternative at similar price.

Durability and how to care for it

Six months and 180 sessions later, our Liforme looks almost new. No fraying at the edges, no visible wear on the top layer where hands and feet go, no fade in colour.

Care: wipe down after each sweaty practice with a damp cloth. Monthly: full wipe-down with mild soap and water, air dry flat (never in direct sun, never tumble dry). Do not use essential oils (they break down the polyurethane).

Liforme Original vs alternatives

Against the Manduka PRO (~£109), Manduka PRO has a 6 mm thickness and lifetime warranty but grip degrades with sweat. Liforme wins on grip; Manduka wins on thickness and warranty.

Against the Lululemon Take Form (~£98), Lululemon has similar grip and thickness for less money. Liforme adds the alignment markings; Lululemon is the cheaper alternative for minimalists.

Against the Jade Harmony (~£79), Jade has excellent grip and open-cell natural rubber. It wears faster than Liforme but costs 30% less. For studio-only practice, Jade is the sensible choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Liforme yoga mat worth the money?

For regular practice (3+ sessions per week), yes. The combination of grip, alignment markings, and durability means the mat lasts 5+ years where cheaper mats need replacing every 18 months.

Is the Liforme Original latex-free?

No. The base is natural rubber (latex). If you have a latex allergy, look at a PVC-based mat like the Manduka PROlite or a TPE mat like the Yogi Bare Paws Classic.

How do I clean a Liforme mat?

Wipe with a damp cloth after sweaty practice. Monthly deep clean with mild soap and lukewarm water, then air-dry flat. Avoid essential oils, bleach, or machine washing.

What does the Liforme smell like when new?

A distinct natural rubber smell that dissipates over 1-2 weeks of airing. If it bothers you, hang the mat over a balcony or chair for 48 hours before first use.

Is the Liforme good for hot yoga?

Yes — it is the mat we recommend specifically for hot yoga. The top layer holds grip even with sweat, where most mats become slippery and require a towel.

Can I take it to a studio class?

Yes. It is 2.5 kg which is heavier than some studio mats but comes with a carry strap (sold separately for £20, not in box). Most users keep a Liforme at home and a cheaper mat for studio transport.
