Mini LED brilliance for less than £800

500+ dimming zones, 1,500 nits peak, 144Hz and Dolby Vision for the price of a mid-range LED.

Our verdict

The Hisense U7N is the TV we have been recommending most often in 2026, because there is nothing in the sub-£800 bracket that comes close to its picture quality. Mini LED with 500-plus local dimming zones, both Dolby Vision and HDR10+, genuine 144Hz gaming and peak brightness past 1,400 nits.

It is not quite OLED. Black levels cannot match LG’s C4 in a pitch-dark room, and off-axis viewing angles are still the classic LCD compromise. But in a normal living room with bright UK daylight, the U7N is actually the better HDR TV because it goes brighter than any OLED at this price.

Pros

  • Genuine Mini LED with 500+ local dimming zones
  • Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+ both supported
  • 144Hz VRR panel — rare at this price
  • Built-in Game Mode Pro with sub-13ms input lag
  • Superb value: OLED-rivalling contrast for half the money

Cons

  • Vidaa OS is functional but not Google TV smooth
  • Off-axis viewing still loses colour saturation
  • Speakers are adequate at best — budget for a soundbar
  • Remote feels plasticky compared to LG or Samsung

Picture quality

Out of the box in Filmmaker Mode the U7N measures DeltaE 2.3 SDR and 3.1 HDR. Calibration drops SDR DeltaE to 1.4.

What matters in daily use is contrast, and the 500+ Mini LED zones do outstanding work. Watching Dune Part Two on Ultra HD Blu-ray, pitch-black interiors stayed genuinely black with no blooming around torchlight.

HDR performance

On a 10% window we measured 1,470 nits peak in Filmmaker Mode, climbing to 1,610 nits in Dynamic. Full-screen sustained 640 nits — bright enough to overcome UK summer sun.

Dolby Vision IQ uses the ambient light sensor to adjust tone mapping. HDR10+ is also supported, so Prime Video plays in native format rather than falling back to HDR10.

Gaming

Two of four HDMI inputs are full HDMI 2.1: 4K/120Hz, up to 144Hz for PC, VRR across FreeSync Premium and HDMI Forum, ALLM, Dolby Vision Gaming.

Input lag in Game Mode Pro: 12.8ms at 4K/60Hz, 6.4ms at 4K/120Hz on our Leo Bodnar tester. Competitive with any premium gaming TV.

Sound and smart platform

Built-in 2.1 channel sound with 40W is OK for news but falls short for films. Budget £150-250 for a soundbar.

Vidaa U8 has all the major UK streaming apps. Interface lags Google TV for discovery; a £45 Chromecast solves that.
