Every insulated bottle is sold on an hours figure, and none of them tells you how it was measured. This guide prices five bottles sold on Amazon UK by what you pay for each litre they hold, from £12.75 to £84.89, and checks each listing's claims against what the brand says on its own site.

How Look Into made this guide: desk research, not a hands-on test. We shortlist on UK availability, compare published specifications and warranty terms, and read verified UK owner reviews, discounting incentivised ratings. Prices in the comparison table are pulled live from Amazon UK. Look Into has not handled these products: every figure comes from the maker, the listing or a named source, read on the date shown.

Prices in this table come from Amazon and are refreshed at least once a day, with the date of the last update under the table. The cost-per-use and running-cost figures on this page use prices Look Into read on 11 October 2026, so they can differ from today's price.

The five bottles, cheapest per litre first

Trebo 2L Insulated Bottle

Cheapest per litre

Two litres of vacuum-insulated 18/8 steel with a wide mouth that takes ice and a carry handle. It is the cheapest bottle here for each litre it holds, and one fill covers a day at a desk or the gym.

The catch: the listing gives an item weight of 1.24kg before any water goes in, so a full bottle is over 3kg. Its "48 hours cold" comes with no stated test conditions.

Coolflask 2L 3-Lid Bottle

Three lids in one

Comes with three lids, a straw, a spout and a handle, so one bottle covers the desk, the gym and the car. 18/8 steel, two litres.

The catch: heavy: the listing gives 1.2kg empty. It claims "over 48H cold" with no test conditions, and three lids is more to keep clean.

Amazon Basics Insulated Bottle

Budget

Double-wall stainless steel in a 20oz size (the listing gives 592ml). The lightest bottle here at a listed 322g.

The catch: a plain screw lid with no straw. Its listing says only that it keeps drinks cold "for hours", which at least claims nothing it cannot back up.

Owala FreeSip Insulated

Best to carry

The FreeSip lid lets you sip through a built-in straw or swig from the spout, and it locks shut for a bag. 710ml at a listed 390g.

The catch: the Amazon listing says it keeps drinks cold for 24 hours, but Owala's own website gave no hours figure when we read it on 30 August 2026 for our claims audit. The lid also has several parts to clean.

LifeStraw Go Insulated

Refill from any tap or stream

A 530ml insulated bottle with a built-in filter, so you can refill from a tap, a stream or a campsite source. The listing rates the membrane filter for 4,000 litres, which is about 1.1p a litre filtered.

The catch: the dearest per litre of capacity by a distance, because you are paying for the filter. We found no hours claim on the listing, and the 4,000-litre filter life is the seller's figure.

What 20 Amazon listings claim about keeping drinks cold

We read the first 20 unsponsored results for "insulated water bottle" on Amazon UK on 11 October 2026, checking each listing's title, bullet points, technical details and description.

What the listing statesListings (of 20)
An hours figure for keeping drinks cold or hot17
Exactly "24 hours" cold14
How the hours figure was measured (start temperature, room temperature or fill level)0
A steel grade (18/8, 304 or 316)13
BPA-free parts16

Fourteen listings landing on the same 24 hours is the pattern to notice. Without a stated starting temperature, room temperature and fill level, a bottle claiming 48 hours cannot be compared with one claiming 24. Our claims audit found the same gap on five brands' own websites, and found no published standard that would close it.

One mismatch stood out. Owala's website gave no hours figure on 30 August 2026, saying only that its bottles are triple-layer insulated. The Owala FreeSip listing on Amazon UK says 24 hours. We cannot tell from either page which is the more recent wording.

700ml or a 2 litre bottle?

The NHS says the Eatwell Guide recommends 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day. A 710ml bottle like the Owala covers part of that in one fill, so you top it up during the day. A 2 litre bottle such as the Trebo or the Coolflask covers a full day in one fill, and it is also the cheaper buy per litre.

The cost is weight. Water weighs a kilogram a litre, so a full 2 litre bottle carries 2kg of water. The Trebo and Coolflask listings give item weights of 1.24kg and 1.2kg, which may include packaging, so a full one is likely to be over 3kg. That is fine on a desk or in a car, and a lot for a rucksack. The Owala (listed at 390g) and the Amazon Basics (322g) are the easier carry.

Questions people ask about insulated bottles

How long do insulated bottles keep drinks cold?

Listings usually claim 12 to 48 hours cold, and 14 of the 20 we read on 11 October 2026 claimed 24 hours. None stated how the figure was measured: no starting temperature, room temperature or fill level. Treat the number as a claim, not a measurement. Opening the lid, a part-full bottle and a warm room all shorten it, and pre-chilling the bottle helps.

Which insulated bottle is the best value?

Per litre of capacity, the Trebo 2L at £12.75 a litre on 11 October 2026. The cheapest bottle to buy outright is the Amazon Basics, but it holds less than a third as much.

Are stainless steel bottles better than plastic?

For most people, yes. Food-grade steel does not take on flavours, holds temperature far better and lasts for years. Plastic is lighter and cheaper. If you want to check the steel, 13 of the 20 listings we read named a grade such as 18/8 or 304.

What size water bottle should I get?

For everyday carry, 500ml to 1 litre. The NHS says to aim for 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day, so a 700ml bottle refilled once covers most of it. Go to 2 litres if you would rather not refill, and accept the weight.

Are insulated bottles dishwasher safe?

The steel body often is, but many lids, especially straw and flip lids, are hand-wash only, and dishwashers can damage the outer finish. Check the care instructions on the listing for your bottle.
