The right wheelchair depends on the user’s strength, lifestyle and where it will be used. Here’s how manual and powered chairs compare.

Manual wheelchairs

  • Self-propelled (large rear wheels) let the user push themselves, good for upper-body strength and staying active.
  • Attendant-propelled (smaller wheels) are pushed by a carer, lighter and more compact.
  • Cheaper, lighter and easier to fold and transport.
  • Require effort or a carer to move.

Powered wheelchairs

  • Battery-powered with a joystick, independence without physical effort.
  • Better for longer distances, slopes and users with limited strength.
  • Heavier and pricier, and need charging and more storage/transport planning.
  • Indoor, outdoor and dual-purpose models are available.

What else to consider

Think about seat size and comfort, how it folds for the car, kerb and ramp capability, and whether you need pressure-relief cushioning for long periods of sitting. A proper assessment from an occupational therapist is invaluable.

Getting one

You may be able to get a wheelchair through the NHS Wheelchair Service, or buy privately for more choice. Disabled users pay 0% VAT. See our wheelchair guide for more, or use the form above for quotes on powered models.
