What wheelchairs are available on the NHS?
The NHS offers a range of manual wheelchairs, including lightweight options, to eligible individuals based on clinical assessment. Eligibility is set locally. Oxford University Hospitals, to take one published example, asks for a permanent disability or a mobility problem lasting more than six months, plus a need to use a chair at least three days a week. Referral should ideally come from a healthcare professional, although self-referral is accepted and may take longer.
To access an NHS wheelchair, you'll typically need a referral to your local wheelchair service. Please note that waiting times can vary, and the model may not always be as compact or travel-friendly as those available for purchase privately.
What weight is considered a lightweight wheelchair?
A lightweight wheelchair generally weighs between 9 kg and 15 kg (without accessories like footrests). Anything under 10 kg is often classed as ultra-lightweight. That weight range matters most for:
- People who travel frequently
- Carers who need to lift or push the chair
- Storage in car boots or tight spaces
- Shorter outings and everyday errands
Lightweight chairs reduce strain on the arms and are easier to manoeuvre than heavier models, especially over longer journeys.
How much does the Aldi wheelchair weigh?
The popular Aldi wheelchair, part of their Specialbuys range, has been featured several times and typically weighs around 12 kg. It's considered a transit wheelchair, meaning it's built to be pushed by an attendant and is not self-propelled. While not the most advanced on the market, it offers solid value and portability for occasional use.
When would a lightweight folding wheelchair be useful?
Lightweight folding wheelchairs are ideal in a variety of situations:
- Travel and holidays, because the folded frame fits in a car boot, a coach locker or an aircraft hold.
- Homes with no spare room, where the chair has to live in a hallway cupboard.
- Daily use, where a lighter frame means less fatigue by the afternoon.
- Carers who lift and fold the chair several times a day.
The trade-off is stability. A lighter frame flexes more on rough ground, and most models at this weight are not built for full-time outdoor use.

- Best for: carers pushing on short journeys.
Karma Ergo Lite 2 Self-Propelled
- Weight: 10.7 kg to 10.9 kg for the complete chair. Karma says the main part is about 6 kg once the rear wheels and footrests come off, which is the figure that matters for a car boot. Checked 26 October 2026; this guide previously said 10.3 kg, which matched no published specification.
- Features: Ergonomic seat, folding frame, ultra-lightweight wheelchair.
- Best for: self-propelling users who are in the chair most days.
Z-Tec Lightweight Folding Transit Wheelchair
- Weight: 13 kg
- Features: Compact design, fixed armrests, attendant brakes.
- Best for: buyers on a tight budget doing short trips.
Benefits of lightweight folding wheelchairs
What these chairs do well:
- They collapse small enough to carry one-handed.
- They fit in car boots, cupboards and on public transport.
- User weight limits vary and are lower than people expect. The Days Escape Lite 16 inch is rated to 100 kg, about 15 stone 10, so check the limit for the exact model you are buying.
- They are easy enough to handle alone, which keeps trips spontaneous.
- A lighter frame is easier on the back of whoever pushes and lifts it.
- Aluminium frames last for years if the chair is kept clean.
Keep the tyres inflated and the folding mechanism free of grit and a chair like this will last several years.
What to look for when choosing a lightweight wheelchair
Before you buy, check:
- Seat width and overall dimensions
- Self-propelled vs. transit models
- Puncture-proof tyres vs. air-filled tyres
- Frame material (aluminium = lighter)
- Storage and transportation needs
- Footrests and armrests are adjustable

Which one should you buy?
For occasional trips out, a transit chair at around 12 kg and under £200 is usually enough. If you are self-propelling most days, it is worth paying more for a sub-11 kg chair with an ergonomic seat, because that weight difference is what you feel by the end of the day. Check whether you qualify for VAT relief before you order, since it takes 20% off the price.
The weight on the box is not the weight you lift
Re-checking the four chairs above on 26 October 2026 turned up the same pattern on every one of them. Each is quoted two ways, with footrests and without, and the gap is 1.5 kg or more. The Days Escape Lite is 10.5 kg stripped and 12 kg as you would push it. Karma quotes 10.7 kg to 10.9 kg for a complete Ergo Lite 2 and about 6 kg for the frame alone. The lighter number is the one that goes in the headline, and it is not the number you lift into a boot unless you take the chair apart first. Compare chairs on the complete weight, or on the heaviest single piece if someone is lifting it in stages.
What changed in this re-check
- The Karma Ergo Lite 2 weight was corrected from 10.3 kg to the published 10.7 kg to 10.9 kg for a complete chair.
- The Days Escape Lite weight was corrected from 11.5 kg to the published 10.5 kg without footrests and 12 kg with them.
- The claim that most of these chairs take up to 18 stone was removed. The one limit we could verify, on the Days Escape Lite 16 inch, is 100 kg or about 15 stone 10.
- The statement that you cannot request a specific brand or model on the NHS was removed, because we could not find it stated by a wheelchair service. Published local eligibility criteria replaced it.
