The UK Student Kit Index prices the same 20-item student room kit every year and reads the total against the maintenance loan. This is the first edition. The 2026 UK student kit costs £569.11. Kitting out a student room takes 15.8% of the first maintenance loan instalment for a new student living away from home outside London.
Every price on this page was captured on the morning of 30 August 2026 through Amazon’s Creators API, the same product feed that powers the price tables across this site. The basket is fixed. Next year we price the identical products again and publish the change, item by item.

What that means against the maintenance loan
Student Finance England pays the maintenance loan in three instalments, one near the start of each term. These are the 2026/27 maximums for new full-time students in England, read from gov.uk on 30 August 2026.

The share is the point. A student outside London hands over roughly one pound in six from their first loan payment before they have paid a week of rent or bought a single textbook. Continuing students on earlier loan plans get less, and students in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are on different systems, so their shares run higher than the table shows. For scale, CPI inflation was 2.9% in the 12 months to July 2026 (ONS). From 2027 this page will report whether the kit is rising faster or slower than that.
What we left out, on purpose
Bedding sets, crockery and pans are left out because halls and house shares vary too much for one honest price. Course materials vary by subject. Printers lost the argument to the university library years ago. The kit is the room itself: cold food, hot drinks, clean clothes, working light, dry air and something to listen to.
Method
The basket is fixed at these 20 products, identified by ASIN. Prices are captured in one session through Amazon’s Creators API and recorded as returned, with no averaging and no waiting for offers to end. The capture dates are set before prices are seen. This edition was captured on 30 August 2026; from 2027 the index prices the basket on 1 July, 1 August and 1 September each year.
If a product is discontinued or unpriced on capture day, we substitute the closest current equivalent from the same brand, or the current pick from our own guide for that category, and list every substitution in the changes table below. The index measures price movement, so silent substitution would break it.

How much does it cost to kit out a university room in 2026?
The UK Student Kit Index puts it at £569.11. That is the price of a fixed 20-item room kit, from a mini fridge down to a draught excluder, captured on 30 August 2026. It excludes bedding sets, crockery, course materials and rent.
Does the maintenance loan cover the student kit?
The loan arrives in three instalments. A new student living away from home outside London can get up to £10,830 in 2026/27, so the first instalment is about £3,610. The full kit takes 15.8% of that payment before rent or food. At the London rate it is 12.1%, and living at home it is 18.7%.
When is the cheapest time to buy the student kit?
We do not know yet, and we will not guess. From 2027 the index prices the same basket on 1 July, 1 August and 1 September, so the summer curve will be published with a year of data behind it.
What are the most and least expensive items in the kit?
The mini fridge is the biggest single line at £101.99, around a fifth of the whole basket. The cheapest is the draught excluder at £6.49. Audio is the quiet budget-eater: headphones and a speaker together cost £100.98.
