Basis: Ofgem price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026, electricity 26.32p per kWh including VAT relief, direct debit. Until 30 September 2026 the capped rate is 26.11p, so every electricity figure below sits about 0.8 per cent above what you pay this month. Wattages are the manufacturers’ own published specifications, opened and checked on 2 September 2026. Analysis by Look Into. We have not measured these airers with a plug-in meter, and this page says so wherever it matters.

Per hour, a heated airer looks unbeatable: 7.9p for a 300W model against 66p for a tumble dryer. Per load, the gap shrinks to a third: on our eight-hour overnight assumption it is 63p a night against 99p a cycle. And if you run a dehumidifier alongside, which is what most people are told to do, the saving nearly disappears. The airer makers all quote the first number. This page prices the job.

Key findings: what drying a load indoors really costs

  1. A heated airer is 88 per cent cheaper than a tumble dryer per hour, but only about a third cheaper per load. A 300W airer costs 7.9p an hour at the October cap rate of 26.32p per kWh; run for our stated eight-hour overnight assumption that is 63p, against the 99p 90-minute dryer cycle on our UK running cost index. Every per-hour figure flatters a device that runs all night.
  2. Add the dehumidifier and the saving nearly vanishes: a 300W airer and a 151W dehumidifier together for eight hours costs 95p, within 4p of the dryer’s 99p cycle. The wattages are Meaco’s and the airer makers’ own published figures; the arithmetic is ours. The dehumidifier still earns its place, because it takes the moisture out of the room rather than leaving it on your walls, but nobody selling you the pair prints this number.
  3. The cheapest powered way to dry clothes indoors that we can compute is an unheated airer with a compressor dehumidifier beside it: about 32p for eight hours, using the 151W MeacoDry Arete One 12L from our dehumidifier guide, where we also derive its 18.1p cost per litre of water removed.
  4. Measured in watts per metre of rail, the rankings reverse. The Tower winged airer has the lowest hourly cost here at 230W, but only 12.6m of rail, which is 18.3 watts per metre of rail, the most expensive on this page. The Minky SureDRI 4 Tier spreads 300W across 23m, 13.0 watts per metre, the cheapest. Wattage figures are from each maker’s own specification, linked in the sources.
  5. The “3p an hour” figure that circulates in airer coverage would need a 114W airer at the October cap. Every full-size heated airer on this page is 230W to 300W by its maker’s own specification, so the honest range is 6.1p to 7.9p an hour.
  6. The makers’ running-cost claims are roughly right per hour and silent per load. Lakeland’s product page says the Dry:Soon Deluxe costs “8p to run” against “65p” for a dryer; Daewoo says “approx. 8p/hour” and “up to 86% cheaper” than a 9kg dryer. At cap rates, 300W does cost about 8p an hour and a 2,500W dryer about 66p, so the claims check out on their own terms. But an airer runs five times longer than a dryer cycle, which is how an 88 per cent per-hour saving becomes a 36 per cent per-load one.
  7. One bestseller publishes no computable inputs at all. The Black+Decker 3-tier airer, made under licence by Benross Group, states no wattage on its own Amazon listing, and we could not find a Black+Decker specification page for it. Retail sites variously describe it as 300W. Until the brand publishes a figure, we treat its running cost as marketing and leave it out of the table below.

The airers, priced from their own specifications

The pod row reads differently because the pod is a different machine: a 1,000W fan heater in a zipped tent, which Lakeland’s own instruction booklet says dries a load in 1 to 3 hours. On the maker’s own timing that is 26p to 79p a load, competitive with an overnight airer run, but only if your loads really finish inside three hours.

The whole job, by method

The honest reading: if your house shrugs off the moisture, a heated airer on its own is a real saving. If you need the dehumidifier running to keep condensation off the windows, you are paying dryer money either way, and the choice is about space, noise and what the heat does for the room rather than the electricity line alone. An airer’s 63p does at least end up as heat in the room you are heating anyway, which a vented dryer throws out of the wall.

The Tower airer is the one already in our UK Student Kit Index basket, where it was £59.99 on 30 August; at £38.99 it is the cheap way into the category. The Minky buys you nearly twice the rail for the same wattage, which is exactly what the watts-per-metre column is for.

The moisture has to go somewhere

A heated airer moves water from your clothes into your air, and that is all it does with it. In a well-ventilated or lightly used room that is fine. In a cold flat with the windows shut it becomes condensation and then mould. The fix is either ventilation, a passive moisture absorber for small amounts, or a compressor dehumidifier. Opened each manufacturer’s own product page or instruction booklet on 2 September 2026, took the stated wattage, and multiplied: watts × hours × the Ofgem capped unit rate. Checked each maker’s own running-cost claim against the same arithmetic.
What we did not do
We have not measured any of these machines with a plug-in meter, and we have not timed how long a load takes to dry on each. Where a session length appears it is a stated assumption, printed next to the figure it produces.
Electricity rate
26.32p per kWh, the Ofgem cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026, including the temporary VAT relief. Until 30 September 2026 the capped rate is 26.11p, which makes every figure here about 0.8 per cent high this month.
Assumptions
Overnight airer or dehumidifier session: 8 hours. Tumble dryer cycle: 90 minutes at 2,500W, the same basis as our running cost index. Drying pod session: the maker’s own claim of 1 to 3 hours.

An unheated airer costs nothing to run but leaves the water in your air. The cheapest powered method we can compute is an unheated airer with a compressor dehumidifier beside it: the 151W MeacoDry Arete One 12L costs about 32p over eight hours at the October cap, and it takes the moisture out of the room while it works.

Do heated airers cause condensation?

They can. Everything the airer evaporates ends up in the room’s air, and in a cool room with the windows shut it will find your coldest wall.
