The short answer (checked 8 November 2026)
- Best overall is a Frameo-powered 10.1-inch WiFi frame, the format that fills most of Amazon UK's digital photo frame chart this week. The Frameo app is free, and its optional Frameo+ plan is listed at $16.99 a year on Frameo's own site.
- No subscription at all: Aura. Aura's own site says there are no subscriptions or fees for its frames, with free unlimited photo and video storage.
- Electricity is a small but real cost, because a photo frame is on all day. A 10-inch frame drawing 4W, as TechRadar measured the Skylight, costs about £6 a year at the price cap if it runs 12 hours a day and sleeps the rest.
- Audit finding: none of the twenty best-selling digital photo frames on Amazon UK, read on 8 November 2026, states how much power it uses, for a device designed to stay switched on.
- The free Frameo app limits you to 10 photos per send and 15-second videos. Frameo+ raises that to 100 photos and two-minute videos.
A WiFi photo frame is one of the easiest Christmas presents to get right for a grandparent: the family sends photos from their phones and they appear on the frame. Two costs keep running after the box is opened. One is electricity, because the frame is meant to stay on. The other is the subscription some makers offer on top of the frame. We worked out both, from figures the makers and an independent reviewer publish, so you can see what the gift costs over five years and not just on the day.
How this page was made
Prices and specs last checked by Look Into on 8 November 2026 · next check 1 January 2027 · how we picked
Prices in this table come from Amazon and are refreshed at least once a day, with the date of the last update under the table. The cost-per-use and running-cost figures on this page use prices Look Into read on 8 November 2026, so they can differ from today's price.
What a photo frame costs to run
None of the twenty listings we read gives a power figure, so we used the nearest published measurement we could find. TechRadar measured the Skylight 10-inch frame at 4W at full brightness, 3W at half brightness and 1.3W in standby. Taking 12 hours a day at 4W and 12 hours in standby at 1.3W:
- (4W x 12h) + (1.3W x 12h) = 63.6Wh, or 0.0636 kWh a day.
- At the Ofgem cap of 26.32p per kWh (1 October to 31 December 2026, GB average, Direct Debit, standing charge excluded, checked 8 November 2026), that is 1.67p a day.
- Over a year, 23.2 kWh, or about £6.11. Over five years, about £30.55.
- Left on at full brightness all day and night, it would be about £9.22 a year.
That is one frame's measured figure, used as a guide. Other 10-inch frames may be in a similar range, but none of them publishes a figure, and a 15.6-inch frame is likely to draw more. Using the frame's sleep schedule, so the screen turns off overnight, is the single biggest saving.
The subscriptions, and what they add
| Platform | Is a subscription needed? | Optional plan, maker's listed price | Five years of the plan | What the plan adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aura | No | None | Nothing | Aura says there are no subscriptions or fees |
| Frameo | No | Frameo+ $16.99 a year or $1.99 a month | $84.95 | 100 photos per send (free: 10), 2-minute videos (free: 15 seconds), remote photo management, cloud backup, Google Cast |
| Skylight | No | Skylight Plus $39 a year | $195 | Remote control from the app, albums, slideshow on a TV |
How we picked these
We read the top twenty of Amazon UK's Digital Photo Frames Best Sellers chart on 8 November 2026 and opened all twenty listings, reading the title, bullet points and specification tables. Twelve of the twenty name Frameo. We picked five frames that cover the three platforms in the chart (Frameo, Aura and Skylight) and the common sizes, then checked each platform's subscription on its own website. We have not used any of these frames.

The Aura Carver is not in the live price table above, because Amazon's product feed does not currently return it. Its card below links straight to the listing.
Frameo WiFi Digital Photo Frame, 10.1-inch, 32GB
Price: check the live price on Amazon · Frameo app, free · optional Frameo+ $16.99 a year · number 2 in Digital Photo Frames, 8 November 2026
A 10.1-inch, 1280 by 800 touchscreen with 32GB of storage, auto-rotate and a wall mount, running Frameo, the free app most frames in the chart use. Family members download the app, connect to the frame with a code, and send photos and videos from their phones. Nothing has to be paid after the box.
The catch: the free app sends 10 photos at a time and videos up to 15 seconds. If the family wants to send a whole holiday album in one go, that is what Frameo+ is for. Frameo frames are sold under many different brand names, so check who actually makes the frame, not just the Frameo name.
Frameo Digital Photo Frame, Oak Wood, 10.1-inch, 32GB
Price: check the live price on Amazon · Frameo app, free · optional Frameo+ $16.99 a year · number 10 in Digital Photo Frames, 8 November 2026
The same Frameo platform and 10.1-inch, 32GB specification in an oak wood surround, which looks more like a picture frame and less like a tablet. Its listing says Frameo+ is an optional upgrade and that no subscription is required, which matches what Frameo itself says.
The catch: it costs more than the plain Frameo frame for what is, inside, the same kind of device. You are paying for the wood.
Frameo 15.6-inch Digital Photo Frame, 64GB
Price: check the live price on Amazon · Frameo app, free · optional Frameo+ $16.99 a year · number 6 in Digital Photo Frames, 8 November 2026
A 15.6-inch Frameo frame with 64GB, twice the storage of the 10-inch models. For someone whose eyesight is not what it was, or for a frame on a wall that is seen from across the room, the bigger screen is the point.
The catch: a bigger screen draws more power than the 4W measured on a 10-inch frame, so expect higher running costs than our figure, and the listing does not say how much.
Aura Carver, 10-inch
Price: check the live price on Amazon · Aura app, free · no subscription · number 9 in Digital Photo Frames, 8 November 2026
Aura's own site says there are no subscriptions or fees for its frames, with free unlimited photo and video storage and feature updates included, and its Amazon listing says the same. If you want to give a frame and never have a renewal email arrive, this is the one.
The catch: it costs well over twice as much as a Frameo frame of the same size, and Aura says a WiFi connection is required because the frame gets its photos from the cloud. It is not in our live price table because Amazon's feed does not return it.
Skylight Digital Photo Frame, 10-inch
Price: check the live price on Amazon · Skylight, free basic tier · optional Skylight Plus $39 a year · number 17 in Digital Photo Frames, 8 November 2026
The frame TechRadar measured for power, at 4W at full brightness and 1.3W in standby, which is where this page's running cost comes from. Its listing says it needs no apps or additional subscriptions to operate, and Skylight's own site lists a free basic tier.
The catch: Skylight Plus, at $39 a year on Skylight's site, unlocks remote control from the app, albums and TV slideshows. Over five years that is $195. You do not have to buy it, but the features it holds back are ones many families want.
What the twenty listings actually say
- None of the twenty states its power use. The only "W" figures in the specification tables are widths in centimetres.
- Twelve of the twenty are Frameo frames, sold under many different brand names. They all use the same free app and the same optional Frameo+ plan.
- Seven mention subscriptions, fees or the free app. Three Frameo listings describe Frameo+ as an optional upgrade. One says the free Frameo app comes with "no subscriptions or hidden fees", which is true of the free app but leaves out that Frameo+ exists. Aura and Skylight say no subscription is needed.
- Only one Frameo listing mentions the free app's 15-second video limit, and none mentions the 10-photo limit per send, both of which come from Frameo's own site.
Buying one as a gift
Set it up before you wrap it. Connect the frame to your own WiFi, install the app on your phone and send a few photos, so it works on Christmas morning and you can show the recipient how to add family members. Then, if the frame has a sleep schedule, switch it on: on our figures, sleeping 12 hours a night cuts the electricity by about a third. If the person has no broadband, a WiFi frame will not work: look for one with a memory card slot instead. Questions people ask
Do digital photo frames need a subscription?
Not the ones in this guide. Aura says there are no subscriptions or fees. Frameo and Skylight work free, and sell optional plans: Frameo+ at $16.99 a year and Skylight Plus at $39 a year on their own sites.
How much electricity does a digital photo frame use?
TechRadar measured a 10-inch Skylight frame at 4W at full brightness and 1.3W in standby. On 12 hours a day and standby the rest, that is about £6.11 a year at the October 2026 price cap of 26.32p per kWh. None of the twenty best sellers we read states its own power use.
What does Frameo+ add?
According to Frameo's site, sending up to 100 photos at once instead of 10, videos up to two minutes instead of 15 seconds, managing frame photos remotely, cloud backup and Google Cast. Photo sharing itself stays free.
Does a digital photo frame need WiFi?
The app-based frames in this guide do, because photos arrive over the internet; Aura says WiFi is required. A frame with a memory card slot can show photos without WiFi, but you have to load them yourself.
