The subscription tax: Ring’s £4.99 plan overtakes its £79.99 doorbell in month 17

The short answer

Ring and Google both charge a plan before you can watch recorded doorbell video back. Over 36 months, Ring’s cheapest plan costs 1.9 times its £79.99 doorbell, and the monthly plan payments pass the doorbell’s price in month 17. We call that the overtake month. eufy stores video locally with no fee. For alarms, human monitoring is where the money goes: Yale’s £36-a-month Secure Pro overtakes its £229.99 kit in month 7. Robot vacuums rarely have a subscription, but the maker’s own parts schedule on a eufy X10 Pro Omni costs £209.94 to £419.88 over three years.

Method in six lines

  1. We read each maker’s own UK plan page and UK store price on 15 September 2026.
  2. The 36-month total is the device price plus the plan, shown with the plan paid annually (three payments) and monthly (36 payments). Per-day plans are multiplied by 1,095 days.
  3. The overtake month is the first month in which the monthly plan payments add up to more than the device price.
  4. Robot vacuum parts are counted at the maker’s own replacement intervals and the maker’s own UK prices.
  5. We leave out delivery, installation, broadband, batteries, free trials and any price change after 15 September 2026.
  6. Plans change often. Every row is dated.

Plans we priced without a doorbell price. Arlo Secure is £7.99 a month for one camera with 7 days of cloud video, £287.64 over 36 months; Arlo’s UK doorbell pages showed no price on the day. Blink Basic is £24.99 a year or £2.50 a month for one device, £74.97 over three years paid annually; we could not read a current UK price for the Blink doorbell itself.

The catch. The cheapest plan covers one device. Add a second Ring camera and you need Ring Multi at £79.99 a year, which takes a Ring doorbell’s three-year total to £319.96. And without a plan, Ring gives you no recorded playback, which is the thing most people buy a video doorbell for.

Plan names change. Google’s UK store now sells Google Home Premium where Nest Aware used to be. Ring Pro, at £15.99 a month or £159.99 a year, adds AI video search and face features.

The catch. A monitored plan is not the same as a police response. In the UK, police forces respond to Type A alarm systems: built to British Standards, signalling to a manned alarm receiving centre, and holding a unique reference number. Robot vacuums: the subscription you don’t sign up for

Most robot vacuums have no subscription. The recurring cost is parts: filters, brushes, dust bags and mop pads, replaced on the maker’s own schedule. eufy is the one UK maker we found selling this as a subscription, an optional accessories service delivered monthly to yearly.

The catch. Makers’ intervals are wide. “Every 3 to 6 months” doubles the bill from one end of the range to the other. We priced genuine parts only; third-party parts are cheaper, and we have not checked whether they fit or last.

What would change these numbers

  • A plan price rise, which happens often, or a free trial ending.
  • A second camera, which moves most brands onto a multi-device plan.
  • Sale prices on the hardware. Deal events move device prices, not plan prices; see our Black Friday hub.
  • Running parts beyond the maker’s interval.

FAQ

Do you need a subscription for a Ring doorbell?

Not for live view and alerts. Ring’s own help page says a subscription is required to review recorded video. The cheapest plan, Ring Solo, was £4.99 a month or £49.99 a year on 15 September 2026.

How much does a Ring doorbell cost over three years?

£229.96 with the Ring Solo plan paid annually: £79.99 for the Battery Video Doorbell plus three years at £49.99. Paid monthly, it is £259.63.

Which video doorbells have no monthly fee?

eufy stores recordings locally with no fee. Its Video Doorbell S220 cost £179.00 on eufy’s UK store on 15 September 2026, so its three-year cost is the same £179.00.

How much does a Google Nest doorbell cost over three years?

£419.99 with Google Home Premium Standard paid annually: £179.99 for the Nest Doorbell (battery) plus three years at £80. Without a plan it keeps 3 hours of video history.

Do robot vacuums have a subscription?

Rarely. eufy sells an optional accessories subscription in the UK. Most makers do not, but following their own replacement schedules cost £155.94 to £467.82 over three years on the models we priced.

Is a monitored alarm plan worth it?

It depends on who responds. Check whether the plan includes a keyholder or guard call-out, and whether the system qualifies for a police response, which in the UK needs an accredited Type A system.
