The short answer
Ten tech gifts from £18.50 to £139, each taken from a Look Into guide where we checked the claims on the box against the maker's own figures. Two prices moved before Christmas in ways worth knowing: removing the adverts from a basic Kindle cost £55 when we checked on 15 September and costs £10 on 4 November, while Amazon's Fire TV Stick HD went from £39.99 to £59.99, up 50%. So buy the ad-free Kindle, and for a streaming stick, the £24.99 Roku does the basic job for less.
Checked 4 November 2026 · desk research by Jacob Whitmore. We have not tested these products. Each pick comes from one of our published guides, and every price and stock status was checked on Amazon UK on 4 November 2026. Prices move daily in the run-up to Black Friday, so check before you buy.

The ten gifts
Each entry says who it suits, what we found when we checked the claims, and the catch. Under £30: the power bank, the streaming stick and the jump starter. Under £50: add the speaker, the radio and the doorbell.
1. Anker Zolo Power Bank 10,000mAh
For: Anyone whose phone dies by teatime · £18.50 on Amazon, 4 November 2026
What we checked: Our power bank investigation found the makers' own figures put about three-quarters of the headline mAh into a phone. On a 10,000mAh pack that means roughly 7,250mAh to 7,580mAh reaching the phone, which is still about two charges of a typical handset.
The catch: If they fly, UK rules since 27 March 2026 allow two power banks per person in hand luggage, never in the hold. This one is well inside the 100Wh limit. Full detail in our power bank guide.
Check price on Amazon →2. Amazon Kindle 16GB (2024), without ads
For: Readers, commuters, anyone who has run out of shelf space · £94.99 on Amazon, 4 November 2026
What we checked: When we checked on 15 September, removing the lock-screen adverts cost £55 (£94.99 with ads, £149.99 without). On 4 November the ad-free Kindle is £94.99 and the version with ads is £84.99, so the gap is £10. Buy the one without ads. Of 25 e-reader battery claims we read, none said how the figure was measured.
The catch: All Kindle listings state a security update period; most rivals' Amazon listings do not. If the person borrows library e-books, look at Kobo instead, which our e-reader guide covers. Full detail in our e-reader guide.
Check price on Amazon →3. Roku Streaming Stick (2025)
For: Anyone with an older TV and no smart apps · £24.99 on Amazon, 4 November 2026
What we checked: We picked this over Amazon's Fire TV Stick HD because the Fire TV stick was £59.99 on 4 November, up from £39.99 when we checked it on 15 September. The Roku does the same basic job for £24.99.
The catch: Its Amazon listing gives no security update date. In our streaming stick audit only Amazon's own devices stated one. Roku's home screen also carries adverts, by Roku's own account, and the listing does not mention them. Full detail in our streaming stick guide.
Check price on Amazon →4. Roberts Revival Petite 2 DAB radio
For: Kitchen radio listeners, older relatives, anyone who likes a proper dial · £99.00 on Amazon, 4 November 2026
What we checked: It has a built-in rechargeable battery, and a full charge costs about a quarter of a penny of electricity at the October 2026 price cap. A DAB radio run on disposable AA batteries costs 4.75p to 20p an hour, by our working.
The catch: Of 15 DAB radio listings that state a battery life, only 4 say what volume it was measured at. Treat any hours figure as a best case. Full detail in our DAB radio guide.
Check price on Amazon →5. Tribit StormBox 2 Bluetooth speaker
For: Students, garden and kitchen listeners · £49.98 on Amazon, 4 November 2026
What we checked: Divide the price by the battery life the maker claims and this is £2.08 for each hour of rated playtime (£49.98 over 24 hours). The Bose SoundLink Flex in the same guide came to £9.37 an hour. Only the much smaller soundcore Select 4 Go was cheaper per hour.
The catch: The 24 hours is the maker's claim. We have not measured it, and playtime falls at high volume. Full detail in our Bluetooth speaker guide.
Check price on Amazon →6. ZVOX AccuVoice AV157 soundbar
For: Someone who keeps asking what was just said on TV · £139.00 on Amazon, 4 November 2026
What we checked: It is built for one job, making speech clearer, which is a more useful gift for many households than a cinema soundbar. Across the 50 bestselling soundbars we read, none stated how much power it draws from the wall, in use or on standby.
The catch: It is a small bar. If they want big film sound, it is the wrong pick. Full detail in our soundbar guide.
Check price on Amazon →7. AstroAI B8 jump starter
For: Drivers, especially new ones, before the first cold snap · £29.95 on Amazon, 4 November 2026
What we checked: In the top 20 jump starter listings, 19 lead with a peak-amps figure, from 500A to 9,000A, an eighteen-fold spread. None states a cranking-amps figure or the test behind its number, so the amps on the box tell you very little. Our guide explains what to look at instead.
The catch: Charge it every few months. A flat jump starter is a paperweight on the morning it is needed. Full detail in our jump starter guide.
Check price on Amazon →8. Netflix-licensed mini smart projector
For: Teenagers' bedrooms, sleepovers, a film night on a bare wall · £59.99 on Amazon, 4 November 2026
What we checked: It states 400 ANSI lumens, the measured brightness figure, which works out at 15.0p per stated lumen, the best value in our projector guide. Watch the headline numbers on rivals: one listing in that guide claims 35,000 lumens while its own specification says 550 ANSI.
The catch: At this price it needs a dark room. It will not beat a TV in daylight. Full detail in our mini projector guide.
Check price on Amazon →9. SOLARBABY wind-up and solar radio
For: Anyone putting together the government's Be Ready kit · £42.99 on Amazon, 4 November 2026
What we checked: The Be Ready checklist, launched on 22 October 2026, asks every household for a battery or wind-up FM radio. This one has a crank, a solar panel and a 10,000mAh battery, and claims about 90 hours of radio on a full charge, which is 47.8p per claimed hour.
The catch: Our first choice, the Philips TAR1609, had no buy box on Amazon on 4 November, so it is not here. The 10,000mAh battery can top up a phone, but expect less than the headline, for the reason our power bank investigation explains. Full detail in our emergency radio guide.
Check price on Amazon →10. Tapo TD21 video doorbell (no subscription)
For: New homeowners, or anyone tired of a doorbell app that wants a monthly fee · £44.97 on Amazon, 4 November 2026
What we checked: It records to a microSD card, so there is no monthly plan. Ring and Nest lock recorded footage behind a subscription that, over a few years, can cost more than the doorbell.
The catch: Point it at your own doorstep. A 2021 UK court case, Fairhurst v Woodard, found a doorbell that recorded a neighbour breached data protection law. Full detail in our no-subscription doorbell guide.
Check price on Amazon →How to read a tech listing before you gift it
- Battery life: in our audits, most battery claims do not say how they were measured. Assume the hours were measured at low volume or low brightness.
- Brightness and power: "lumens" without "ANSI", or "amps" without "cranking", are marketing numbers. Look for the measured figure in the specification table.
- Security updates: anything that connects to the internet should say how long it will get updates. Many Amazon listings leave this blank.
- Subscriptions: doorbells, cameras and some streaming devices cost money after Christmas. Check what works without a plan.

How Look Into made this guide
Desk research. Every pick and every claim finding comes from a Look Into guide linked in its entry, where the method and sources are set out in full. On 4 November 2026 we opened each of the ten Amazon UK listings and recorded the price, stock status and whether it could be added to a basket. Two first-choice picks were replaced: the Philips TAR1609 had no buy box, and the Fire TV Stick HD had risen to £59.99.
