The short version
- Do not assume a sale means a lower price. When our sister site Review Mobility tracked 20 mobility products on Amazon through October's Prime Big Deal Days, none of the 20 was cheaper at its check during the event than on the day before. None of the 8 scooters fell in price.
- If you qualify for VAT relief, that is worth more than most sale discounts. On a price that includes 20% VAT, buying VAT-free saves about 16.7%, so a discount has to be bigger than that to beat it.
- Write down the price of the model you want now. That is the only way to know on 27 November whether it has really dropped.
What October's sale showed
Review Mobility recorded the Amazon price of 20 products it had already ranked (8 mobility scooters, 6 riser recliners and 6 rollators) on 5 October 2026, then checked them again at 08:15 BST on 6 October, during Prime Big Deal Days. Eighteen were the same price and 2 were out of stock or months from dispatch. The biggest real fall it recorded during the event was 4%, on a riser recliner. One rollator claimed 15% off a recommended price, did not move during the event, and cost 18% more on 8 October than on 5 October. Review Mobility's full deal check lists every product and price.
That is one event and one marketplace, so it does not prove Black Friday will be the same. It does show that a "was" price or a percentage badge is not evidence of a saving on its own.
VAT relief can beat any sale
HMRC's VAT Notice 701/7 lets an eligible disabled person buy certain equipment without VAT. Class 2 mobility scooters, the pavement models, can qualify. Class 3 scooters, which are built for the road, normally do not (section 4.10.2). The seller should ask you for a written eligibility declaration (section 3.6).
The arithmetic: a price including VAT is the pre-VAT price × 1.2. Removing the VAT takes off 0.2 ÷ 1.2 = 16.7% of the price you see. So if a scooter is £1,200 including VAT, buying it VAT-free costs £1,000. A Black Friday discount would need to be more than 16.7% to beat that, if the VAT-free seller charges the same pre-VAT price. Not every Amazon marketplace seller offers VAT relief, and Review Mobility found that 17 of its 20 products were sold by other sellers rather than Amazon itself. Check before you buy.

How to check a Black Friday deal
- Record today's price of the exact model, with the date, on two or three retailers.
- Ignore the "was" price. Compare the 27 November price with your own record, not the retailer's.
- Check who is selling it. On Amazon, the seller name sits next to the buy button. A specialist shop may include delivery to a room, setup or a service visit that a marketplace seller does not.
- Check the dispatch date. A low price on stock that ships in months is not a deal if you need it this winter.
- Ask about VAT relief before comparing prices, because it changes which price is lower.

- Anyone who needs the equipment now. Six weeks of managing without it costs more than a discount that may not come.
- Anyone eligible for VAT relief who has found the right model at a fair pre-VAT price. On October's evidence the relief is the more reliable saving.
- Anyone whose needs may change soon. Hiring a scooter may suit better than buying one in a sale.
