Key figures
Prices captured at Argos and Lakeland on 23 October 2026.
- A budget kitchen prep kit costs £115.49. That is the cheapest qualifying food processor, vegetable chopper, digital scale, chef's knife, hand blender, food storage set and food thermometer in our pools.
- The mid-range kit costs £296.18, £180.69 or 156.5% more than budget.

The thermometer jumps from 14.3% of the budget basket to 26.7% of the mid-range basket because the pool's median product is a wireless, app-connected probe rather than a wired one.
Which upgrades buy something real?
Each row compares what the listings state, not how the products perform. We did not test anything.
| Item | Budget to mid-range: what the extra money buys on paper | Mid-range to premium: what the extra money buys on paper |
|---|---|---|
| Food processor (+£25, then +£250) | Less, not more. 1.4L working capacity and 500W fall to 0.83L and 250W. Both carry a 1-year guarantee. | A 30-year limited motor repair guarantee, three bowls and 950W. Argos states 1.3L of liquid working capacity. |
| Vegetable chopper (+£15, then +£149) | One more year of guarantee (2 against 1) and two lidded 500ml cups. Same 0.5L working capacity. | Cordless use, 1.18L capacity and a whisk. Same 2-year guarantee. |
| Scale (+£6, then +£40) | The best upgrade in the index: 15 years of guarantee instead of 1, at the same 5kg and 1g. | Not assessed: the Beurer Nutritional's specification page was not read. |
| Chef's knife (+£16.50, then +£41) | A Japanese steel blade, forged, with a sheath. Neither listing states a guarantee. | A 25-year guarantee and Damascus pattern. Stated hardness HRC 52 to 54 on the premium knife; the mid-range listing states none. |
| Hand blender (+£44.99, then +£75) | 1,000W against 200W, a steel wand, chopper and whisk. Both listed with a 1-year guarantee. | Hand mixer and chopper heads. Specification page not read. |
| Food storage (+£10.50, then +£11) | Six containers instead of three, leakproof seal claim. Both 1-year guarantee. | Four containers, 3-year guarantee, hand wash only. |
| Thermometer (+£62.70, then +£184) | Wireless, app-connected probe. Guarantee falls from lifetime (OXO) to 2 years. | Four probes, Wi-Fi hub. Same 2-year guarantee. |
For food safety, the Food Standards Agency's advice needs only "a clean food thermometer" to check that the middle of the food reaches 70°C for 2 minutes, or an equivalent time and temperature such as 75°C for 30 seconds. The £16.50 budget probe measures core temperature. The extra £62.70 for the median wireless probe buys convenience, not a food-safety function the FSA asks for.
A value kit, chosen on stated specifications
This is an editorial selection, not part of the index method. Each pick is the item with the best stated capacity or guarantee for its price in our guides.

| Digital scale | Salter Digital Kitchen Scale (black) | Argos £11.00 | 15-year guarantee, 73p per guaranteed year |
| Chef's knife | Robert Welch Professional 20cm | Lakeland £34.99 | 25-year guarantee per Lakeland, £1.40 per guaranteed year |

| Thermometer | OXO Softworks Digital Thermometer | Argos £16.50 | Lifetime guarantee, measures core temperature |
| Total | £164.98 |
Against the mid-range basket (£296.18), the value kit is £131.20 cheaper. Its stated guarantee is longer for the food processor, chef's knife, hand blender and thermometer, the same for the scale and storage, and shorter for the chopper (1 year against 2).
Method
What we measured: the price, on one evening, of seven types of kitchen prep equipment, sold new by two UK high street retailers.
- Retailers and date. Argos (argos.co.uk) and Lakeland (lakeland.co.uk), prices read on 23 October 2026. Sale prices were recorded as shown, with the "was" price noted in the data file.
- Pools. For each item type we took the retailer's own first page of results for a fixed search term (listed in the methodology file), kept products sold by the retailer itself (Argos catalogue numbers, not marketplace sellers), and applied a qualifying rule for each type. Argos was the primary retailer. Where Argos had fewer than five qualifying products, the pool came from Lakeland instead (this applied only to chef's knives). Colour variants of one model count once.
- Tiers. Budget is the cheapest product in the pool. Mid-range is the middle product (for an even-sized pool, the cheaper of the two middle products). Premium is the dearest. Ties are broken by larger stated working capacity, then longer stated guarantee, then catalogue number.
- What we did not do. We did not buy, handle or test any product, apply delivery charges, use loyalty prices or include second-hand items.
The full reproducible method, qualifying rules and search terms are in the methodology document. The complete data, with every pool member and URL, is in the source register.
Limits
- Pools come from two retailers' first page of search results on one date. Another retailer, or the same retailer on another day, would give different extremes.
- Cheapest and dearest are sensitive to a single product. The premium thermometer (£263.20, four probes) and premium chopper (£179, cordless with battery) are the main drivers of the premium total.
- Seven pool members (three scales and four hand blenders, including the premium scale and premium hand blender) were priced from the search results page without reading their specification pages, so the upgrade analysis for those rows is incomplete.
- The thermometer pool has six products; the food storage pool has eight. Small pools make the median less stable.
- Storage sets vary in number and size of containers; the index prices sets, not litres.
- No figure in this index measures quality or durability.
