The short version

  • Over five years a scooter costs about £765 to £3,287 in total, depending on type and how it is looked after. Prices were read on 15 October 2026.
  • The purchase price is between a fifth and three quarters of that five-year total.
  • Batteries make the biggest difference: one replacement in five years or three, with lithium packs at up to £425 each.
  • Electricity is the smallest cost, about £3 to £13 a year for a weekly full charge at the October 2026 cap.
  • Each total below lists its inputs, so you can rework it with your own numbers and cite it.

The sticker price is rarely the price paid. A mobility scooter needs batteries, ideally insurance, possibly a yearly service, and electricity. None of the shop pages that rank for scooter prices adds these up, so we did, for three common kinds of scooter, using prices we read on 15 October 2026.

Low: one battery replacement, £38 a year insurance, no servicing. High: three battery replacements, £65 a year insurance, a dealer service every year. Both include a weekly full charge at the 26.32p per kWh cap rate.

The low and high columns are not best and worst cases for every owner. They are the two ends of what the published prices and battery-life claims allow. A careful owner who stores the scooter indoors and charges it properly will usually sit nearer the low end.

Where the money goes

Batteries: the cost nobody prices

Battery life is the biggest unknown, and the sources do not agree. Surewise says packs usually need replacing every 2 to 4 years. Mobility World says 12 to 24 months. Our own Mobility Cost Index uses 12 to 18 months. On a lead-acid scooter the difference is small money, because a pair of 12V blocks costs £54.98 to £150. On a lithium boot scooter it is the whole story: three £425 packs would cost more than the scooter.

Match a replacement to the battery you are taking out: same voltage, same or similar amp-hours, same terminal type and size. If you are not sure, ask a dealer before ordering.

Prices in this table come live from Amazon and can change through the day. Prices quoted in the text were checked by Look Into on 15 October 2026, so the two can differ.

Small 24V lead-acid

Xplorer pair of 12V 12Ah AGM batteries

£54.98 for the pair that powers most small 24V pavement and portable scooters. The cheapest battery cost in our model.

The catch: check the terminal type against your old batteries before you order.

Mid-size lead-acid

2 x LUCAS 12V 20Ah

£76.99 a pair. Two pairs make the 48V 20Ah set used by scooters like the Veleco ZT63, which is how we priced the road scooter.

The catch: "Only 11 left" on 15 October 2026, so the price may not hold.

Mid-size, alternative

Mobility scooter AGM pair, 12V 22Ah

£84.99 for a 22Ah pair, a common size for larger Class 2 and smaller Class 3 scooters.

The catch: a 22Ah pair costs £8 more than the 20Ah LUCAS pair. Buy the size your scooter already takes.

Large lead-acid, cheapest

SuperBatt pair of 12V 36Ah

£109.99, the cheaper of the two 36Ah pairs we found, for bigger road scooters.

The catch: 36Ah blocks are heavy. Check they physically fit your battery box.

Large lead-acid

Mobility scooter AGM pair, 12V 36Ah

£150.00 for a 36Ah pair from the same range as the 22Ah pair above.

The catch: £40 more than the SuperBatt pair for the same stated capacity.

Lithium, branded

Monarch Mobility lithium battery

£425.00 for a lithium pack the listing says fits Monarch Genie scooters, in 10Ah and 20Ah versions. The Genie Auto is on the Motability price list, which makes this a useful price to know if you are weighing leasing against buying.

The catch: it fits Monarch models only, and it is the high price in our lithium scenario.

Insurance: optional, but cheap

GOV.UK says you do not need insurance for a Class 2 or Class 3 scooter, although it is recommended. Published starting prices were £38 a year at Surewise and £65 a year at CSIS. Blue Badge Mobility Insurance also advertises "from £38" without saying for what period. Read what scooter insurance covers and costs.

Servicing: the price is usually hidden

Of the three dealer service pages we checked, one published a price: Mobility World, £169.95 with VAT relief or £203.94 with VAT. The others ask you to call. We include a yearly service only in the high scenario.

Electricity: the smallest line

A 24V 12Ah lead-acid battery holds 0.288kWh. Charged from flat once a week, that is about 15kWh a year, roughly £4 at the October 2026 cap. A big 0.96kWh road-scooter battery comes to about £13 a year. If you have heard "£5 to £10 a month", the arithmetic does not support it.

Ways to cut the five-year cost

  • If you are eligible, claim VAT relief on a Class 2 scooter: GOV.UK says it can be bought VAT free with a declaration to the supplier.
  • Store and charge the battery indoors: cold shortens battery life.
  • Compare a used dealer scooter with a fresh battery: our used scooter checklist.
  • For short-term needs, hiring avoids every cost on this page.
  • If you get the enhanced mobility rate of PIP, compare a Motability lease.

Questions people ask

How much does a mobility scooter cost to run per year?

Electricity is the small part: about £3 to £13 a year for one full charge a week at the October 2026 price cap. Insurance adds £38 to £65 a year at published starting prices, and a dealer service, if you have one, was £169.95 with VAT relief at the one dealer we found publishing a price. Batteries are the big variable.

How often do mobility scooter batteries need replacing?

Sources disagree. Surewise says every 2 to 4 years even when well maintained. Mobility World says 12 to 24 months depending on use. We model both: one replacement in five years at best, three at worst.

How much is a replacement mobility scooter battery?

On Amazon UK on 15 October 2026, a pair of 12V 12Ah lead-acid blocks was £54.98 and a pair of 12V 36Ah blocks £109.99 to £150. Branded lithium packs were £254.99 and £425.00. Surewise puts lithium packs for folding scooters at about £300 to £600.

Is it cheaper to lease through Motability?

The lease covers insurance, servicing, batteries and tyres, but costs at least £21.87 a week from your mobility allowance. We compare the two in Motability vs buying outright.

Do I have to pay road tax or insurance on a scooter?

GOV.UK says there is no vehicle tax on a scooter registered with the DVLA, and insurance is not required for Class 2 or Class 3, though it is recommended.
