The short version

  • The VOCIC folding scooter is the cheapest that states its numbers: £499.99 on 15 October 2026, 3.7mph, a 24V 12Ah battery and a 5-year manufacturer warranty in its specification table.
  • The iCAN X-15 is our pick under £700, with an 18kg frame and a 4mph Class 2 top speed for £649.99.
  • The two cheapest, the iCAN X-02 and the Discover Mobility Pilot at £399.99 each, both leave basic figures off the listing.
  • A £499.99 lead-acid scooter comes to about £681 over three years with one battery, entry-level insurance and electricity.
  • None of the six listings mentions VAT relief, which eligible buyers can claim on a Class 2 scooter.

How we picked these

We worked from the listings only. We have not ridden or weighed these scooters. We searched Amazon UK on 15 October 2026 and picked six under £1,000 across the main types: two of the cheapest, a folding scooter that states its battery and warranty, a non-folding pavement scooter, a light folding scooter, and the only road-going (8mph) scooter we found under £1,000. Every figure is what the listing states that day. The three-year cost uses only prices we read on 15 October 2026, and we say where a figure could not be priced.

The six worth looking at

Cheapest, if you need little

iCAN X-02

£399.99 for a 4mph portable scooter with a removable 12Ah battery, a claimed 12.5 miles and a 120kg user limit. The listing calls itself "UK Regulated".

The catch: for a scooter sold as portable, the listing does not state what it weighs. Ask before you buy if you will be lifting it into a car.

Cheapest with a high user limit

Discover Mobility Pilot

Also £399.99, with a 136kg user limit, an LED headlight and a removable battery. The listing states 38kg.

The catch: the listing we read gives neither a range nor a battery size, the two numbers that decide whether it gets you home.

Cheapest that states its numbers

VOCIC folding scooter

£499.99 for a folding scooter with a 3.7mph top speed, a 24V 12Ah lead-acid battery and a 5-year manufacturer warranty listed in its specification table, the longest warranty we saw. Its battery is the standard pair of 12V 12Ah blocks, which sell for about £55 a pair on Amazon today.

The catch: 35kg is heavy for a folding scooter, and the listing gives two ranges, 12.5km in the title and 20km in the bullets. Plan on the lower one.

Pavement scooter

Livewell Pavement 4mph

£565.00 for a 4mph pavement scooter claiming 11 miles, with an off-board charging socket so you can charge the battery indoors.

The catch: at 32kg it is too heavy for most people to lift into a boot, and the listing does not state the battery size or user limit.

Best under £700

iCAN X-15

An 18kg frame without its battery, a battery the listing says weighs about 1kg, 4mph and the words "Class 2" on the listing. A claimed 15 miles. It is also our pick in the folding scooter guide.

The catch: its lithium battery has no amp-hour figure, so neither its watt-hours nor a replacement price can be worked out from the listing.

Road-going under £1,000

Veleco ZT16

The only 8mph scooter we found under £1,000: £850.99, a 48V lead-acid battery and a claimed 15 to 19 miles.

The catch: 8mph makes it Class 3. GOV.UK says that means DVLA registration, lights and indicators, and Class 3 scooters cannot be bought VAT free unless designed solely for disabled people. The listing mentions none of this.

What it costs over three years

The sticker is the smallest surprise. These are the costs that follow it, using only prices we read on 15 October 2026.

CostLowHighWhere the figure comes from
Insurance, 3 years£114£195Published starting prices of £38 a year (Surewise, prices dated August 2025) and £65 a year (CSIS, for a scooter worth up to £3,500)
One lead-acid battery set (24V)£54.98£109.99Amazon UK pairs of 12V blocks: 12Ah at £54.98, 36Ah at £109.99
One lithium pack£254.99£425.00The two branded scooter lithium packs we found on Amazon UK
Electricity, weekly full charge, 3 years£9.74£11.84About 37kWh to 45kWh for 24V batteries of 10Ah to 12Ah, at the 26.32p per kWh cap rate for October to December 2026
Servicing is extra if you choose it: the one dealer we found publishing a price charged £169.95 with VAT relief, or £203.94 with VAT.

Worked through for the VOCIC: £499.99, plus one £54.98 battery pair, plus £114 of entry-level insurance and about £12 of electricity, comes to roughly £681 over three years. The scooter is about three quarters of that. On a lithium scooter, one replacement pack can cost more than half what the scooter did. For five-year totals across all three scooter types, see what a scooter really costs to own.

What the listings leave out

  • 0 of 6 mention VAT relief in their own text, though eligible buyers can claim it on Class 2 scooters.
  • 2 of 6 do not state a weight or a range.
  • 1 of 6, the VOCIC, gives two different figures for both its range and its user limit.
  • The one 8mph scooter does not mention DVLA registration.
  • Across the first 20 Amazon UK folding scooter listings we read the same day, 6 stated a top speed above the 4mph Class 2 limit.

Questions people ask

Can you get a decent mobility scooter for under £1,000?

Yes, if you mean a pavement scooter. Every folding and portable scooter we found on Amazon UK on 15 October 2026 cost under £1,000, from £399.99. What you give up at the bottom of the range is information: the cheapest listings often leave out weight, range or battery details.

Can I get VAT relief on a cheap mobility scooter?

GOV.UK says Class 2 scooters, designed not to exceed 4mph, can be bought VAT free by people who are chronically sick or disabled, using an eligibility declaration with the supplier. Being older is not enough on its own. None of the six listings here mentions VAT relief in its own text, so ask the seller before ordering.

What does a cheap mobility scooter cost over three years?

Add insurance from about £38 to £65 a year, at least one replacement battery, and a few pounds of electricity. On a £499.99 scooter with a lead-acid battery that comes to around £680 over three years before any servicing.

Is there a road-legal mobility scooter under £1,000?

The Veleco ZT16 is listed at £850.99 with an 8mph top speed. An 8mph scooter is Class 3, so GOV.UK says it must be registered with the DVLA, and the listing does not mention that.

Should I buy second hand instead?

A used scooter from a dealer can get you a better-known brand for the same money. Read our used scooter checklist first: the battery decides the deal.
