The short version
- Of the 45 e-readers in Amazon UK’s top 50 on 15 September 2026, 25 listings make a battery claim, from “long battery life” to “up to 12 weeks”. None of the 25 says how the figure was measured. We call this the conditionless week.
- Kobo does publish test conditions on its own site: 30 minutes of reading a day, a set light level, wireless off. On Amazon, the same Kobo models show “4 Hours”, “49 Hours” and “2 weeks” in the battery field, against Kobo’s own 40, 42 and 53 days.
- Turning the lock-screen adverts off costs £55 on the basic Kindle (£94.99 with ads, £149.99 without) and £40 on the Paperwhite, at Amazon’s prices on the day.
- All 24 Kindle listings state a security update period. None of the 21 other e-reader listings does, although Kobo publishes one on its own site: updates until at least the end of 2028.
- The cheapest book is a library book. Kobo readers borrow from UK libraries through OverDrive and Libby. Libby’s own help page says reading Libby books on a Kindle is available in the US only.
E-readers sell on screens and batteries. The screen claims are specific. The battery claims usually are not: “weeks”, “long”, “up to”. A week of reading is not a unit.
So this guide sets each claim beside what the maker says about how it was measured, then adds the costs that arrive after you buy: adverts, subscriptions and where your books will come from.
The short answer
For most readers, the Kindle Paperwhite at £159.99 with ads is the best all-rounder: waterproof, a 7-inch screen and Amazon’s claim of up to 12 weeks per charge. If you borrow from your library, the Kobo Clara BW at £149.99 reads UK library ebooks directly and Kobo states how its 53-day battery figure was measured. The basic Kindle at £94.99 with ads is the cheapest way in.
How this guide was made: desk research, not a hands-on test. We have not read on these devices. Prices are Amazon UK on 15 September 2026. Battery claims, screens and update periods come from Amazon’s listings and UK news pages, Kobo’s UK pages and PocketBook’s own site. Subscription prices come from Amazon and Kobo.

Kobo’s battery figures and test conditions are from Kobo’s UK product pages. The Kindle figures are from Amazon’s own listings, which add only that battery life may vary depending on use. Update periods are from Kobo’s security policy page and Amazon’s listings.
The conditionless week
We read the 50 bestselling listings in Amazon UK’s eBook Readers chart on 15 September 2026: title, bullet points, product details, A+ content and description. Five were not e-readers (a charging stand, two screen protectors and two books), which leaves 45.
Twenty-five of the 45 make a claim about battery life. None of the 25 says what the claim assumes: how long you read each day, how bright the light is, whether wireless is on. That is the conditionless week. Without the conditions, six weeks and 53 days cannot be compared, because they may describe very different reading.
The makers can publish the conditions when they choose to. Kobo’s UK pages give 30 minutes of reading a day with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off, at 10% light for the Clara BW and 30% for the colour models.
Four hours, 49 hours or 42 days?
Amazon’s product details include a “Battery life” field that sellers fill in. On the Kobo Libra Colour listing it reads 4 Hours. On the Kobo Clara Colour it reads 49 Hours. On the Clara BW it reads 2 weeks. Kobo’s own figures for the same three readers are 40, 42 and 53 days.
The same fields carry other slips. The Clara BW listing gives its display resolution as 800×600, and the Clara Colour’s as 1280 x 720. Kobo’s pages give 1448 x 1072 for both. Read the maker’s page, not the details table.
The ad-free premium
Amazon sells most Kindles in two versions: with adverts on the lock screen, and without. On 15 September 2026 the basic Kindle was £94.99 with ads and £149.99 without, a £55 difference. The Paperwhite was £159.99 with ads and £199.99 without, a £40 difference.
The gap moves with Amazon’s discounts, and on the day the with-ads Kindle was the discounted one. If lock-screen adverts do not bother you, the with-ads version is the same reader for less.
Where the books come from
Kindle Unlimited costs £9.49 a month in the UK, according to Amazon’s UK news page, which was last updated in December 2025. That is £341.64 over three years. Kobo Plus Read is £8.99 a month after a 30-day trial.
Libraries are free. Kobo’s help page lists the United Kingdom among the countries where OverDrive works on its readers, and its Clara Colour and Libra Colour pages mention borrowing through Libby. Libby’s own help page says reading Libby books on a Kindle e-reader is available in the US only.
Put together, a basic Kindle with Kindle Unlimited for three years comes to £436.63. A Kobo Clara BW reading library books comes to £149.99. That is the library gap.
How long the software is looked after
Every one of the 24 Kindle listings in the top 50 says Amazon will provide security updates until at least four years after the device was last sold new on its websites. That is a rule rather than a date, but it is on the page.
None of the 21 other e-reader listings states an update period. Kobo publishes one on its own site: security updates until at least 31 December 2028 for the Clara BW, Clara Colour, Libra Colour and Sage, and at least four years from when a device was last on sale. PocketBook’s pages we read did not give one.

Amazon Kindle (2024), with ads
Cheapest£94.99 for a 6-inch, 300ppi reader with 16GB and an adjustable front light. Amazon’s listing claims up to six weeks per charge.
The catch: Amazon’s buying guide lists it as not waterproof, it cannot borrow UK library ebooks, and the ad-free version was £55 more on the day.

PocketBook Verse Pro
Widest format list£149.00. A waterproof 6-inch, 300dpi reader with 16GB. PocketBook lists 21 formats, including EPUB, PDF, MOBI and DjVu, and it reads text aloud.
The catch: PocketBook gives no battery life figure of its own, only a 1,500mAh capacity. The 30 days on Amazon is the seller’s field, with no conditions.

Kobo Clara BW
Best for library readers£149.99. A waterproof 6-inch reader with 16GB that borrows UK library ebooks through OverDrive and Libby, and Kobo states how its battery figure was measured: up to 53 days at 30 minutes a day.
The catch: Amazon’s details table gets it wrong: 2 weeks of battery and an 800×600 screen, against Kobo’s 53 days and 1448 x 1072. Kobo’s own store showed a £129.99 sale price on its listing page.

The catch: The ad-free version was £199.99, £40 more. Like every Kindle, it does not borrow UK library ebooks, and the 12 weeks come with no stated conditions.

Kobo Clara Colour
Cheapest colour£169.99. A 6-inch colour E Ink reader, 300ppi for text and 150ppi for colour, with library borrowing and a stated battery figure: up to 42 days at 30 minutes a day with the light at 30%.
The catch: Colour is half the sharpness of text, so it suits covers, comics and highlights more than photos. Amazon’s details table lists 49 Hours of battery.

Kobo Libra Colour
Bigger colour screen£209.00 on Amazon against £239.99 on Kobo’s own site. A 7-inch colour reader with 32GB and a 2,050mAh battery, rated by Kobo at up to 40 days at 30 minutes a day.
The catch: Amazon’s details table says 4 Hours of battery, which is wrong by Kobo’s figures. And it costs £39.01 more than the Clara Colour for an extra inch and more storage.

Can you borrow library books on a Kindle in the UK?
